Motivation

We have been going through the motivational sessions with our sales reps lately. Many things motivate a rep. Salary, commissions, atmosphere, career opportunities. The Funny thing is that all this stuff is external to the person. It is something the company can help with, or do for you.

There is one more thing here that we rarely discuss and treat as motivation. In my opinion, though it is the most powerful one. So why don’t you sell more/do your work better for personal reasons? Why not treat each deal as a challenge where you either win or lose? Why not take it personally? Are you capable of doing this work? Can you do it with excellence? How many job-related web blogs and books you are reading monthly? Zero? Then what is the point wasting your time here?

To me, this personal development thing is something that should motivate better than any money. After all, you spend about a third of your lifetime at work. It makes these 8-10 hours a day very meaningful as life is short, and there is no point spending it on something you do not care much about. These times should benefit you. It is very personal actually.
